So What a Face

Well, what can I say ? Yesterday's evening kicked ass BIG TIME !

UneXpect was, as I eXpected (hehe) barely audible and boring as shit. I defeinitely don't get this nonsense.
Bigelf is a fucking cool band that knows how to ROCK, and they proved it one more time ! Mike joined on the drums during Blackball, that was pretty sweet.
Opeth mastered the stage and were, put simply, absolutely awesome. Great sound, great setlist, incredible performance. Ending the set with Hex Omega : EPIC WIN.

And finally, DT came on. Short set, great setlist (minus Wither), fantastic performance !

The set :

Psycho (intro tape)
A Nightmare to Remember
The Mirror>
Lie
A Rite Of Passage
Keyboard solo (Jordan jammed with himself ! Unbelievable : he had this cartoon 3D version of himself on the screens, and the two of them really put on a kickass keyboard duel)
Wither
The Dance Of Eternity
In The Name Of God

Encore :

The Count Of Tuscany

Check out Youtube for some videos (type in "Dream Theater Paris" and go for the latest ones) !

Can't wait for next year when their going to be doing their headlining tour. They skipped the Northwest on their Progressive Nation tour so I didn't get to see them this year.

Yeah. I've heard they're hitting all the cities they missed on PN09 when they do their headlining one this Spring. I think it'll be "An Evening With" as well.

And, Val, was Unexpect really that bad? I figured they'd be pretty decent watching their videos.

Another "An Evening With" tour is unlikely I think. I'm pretty sure their done with those for a while.

Well, a friend of mine (Chris from Scale the Summit) said that Portnoy told him that they aren't doing PN2010 and instead will be doing a more headlining-ish tour next year. Portnoy has also said that he wants to go back to doing An Evening With tours in many interviews, so we'll see. I think they want to so they can play the AA Suite, if you will, in one show without it being the only thing they can play, due to time.

Even if they only had one opening band, it would still allow them to have a much longer set.

Yup, I know for sure that the "An Evening With" shows are over. The guys are simply too old now to perform 3-4h gigs every night (and who could blame them, given the music they play). At least, they're over for most of us : for example, on the 2007 tour, they did play 3h shows in Australia, since it was the first time they went there. I think they will do longer shows too this year when they come back (plus they will most probably cover a classic album too, which they only do when on a two sets, 3h show setting).

But it's also true that the Progressive Nation won't occur every time. I'm guessing Mike wants to bring it to Asia and South America now, and go back to headlining shows in Europe and North America (with one or maybe two opening acts, and a 2h/2h30 DT set afterwards).

Finally, here's some live dance of eternity for you What a Face

I like BC&SL, but I'm a bigger fan of older DT material.

Well it seems most DT fans fall into one category or the other... First the "older fans" (which aren't the oldest ones all the time btw) who mostly enjoy the pre-SFAM era and tend to despise the post-SFAM era ; and then the recent fans who discovered the band with a post-SFAM album and, subsequently, sometimes have trouble getting the old material.

Sadly this often turns to open battles between Moore lovers and Rudess enthusiasts... while (imho) both of them are awesome and equally contributed to put DT where they are today.

My personal favourite will probably always be Images And Words. That record is fucking over-the-top...

Both Kevin and Jordan (and even Derek!) are fantastic keyboardists. They all just have their own strengths and styles so I can understand someone not liking one of them. My favorite of their albums is also Images and Words. I love both old and new DT though.

I like SFAM...so I am a middle fan alien ..and I like Systematic Chaos and some older albums of DT I like too: Awake, Images and Words etc...and now really funny for me is when DT uploads almost every day on myspace the same kind of photo - photo after concert on the stage with audience jocolor

i prefer the middle section of their albums: Train of thought (my first DT-album), Scenes of a Memory(N°1 in top DT-albums for me), Six Degrees... but systematic chaos is deffinatly one of their best as wel.

Systematic Chaos is one of my least favorite of theirs. If When Dream and Day Unite had a better production value and Labrie on vocals it would probably rank above SC for me.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

Whatever plans they had for a spring 2010 North American tour were canceled. They completely skipped over the northwest for their Progressive Nation tour so I was really looking forward to seeing them next year.

This makes me a sad panda.

I'm looking forward to hearing this new instrumental they're recording, though...

Aren't there a bunch of other bands doing tracks for this? I heard that either Trivium, Slipknot, Megadeth, or someone of the sort was..

That wouldn't surprise me since it was Roadrunner that approached DT about it. All of those 9except Trivium I think) are Roadrunner bands.
