Extreme stuff
Any extreme metal fan 'round here ? Come and say hi
Just got the promo for the new Nile album : it's a fucking slaughter. Their last two albums weren't that good imho, but this one is waaaay better and though it cannot rival In Their Darkened Shrines in any way, it still reminds me why I love(d) this band. Extremely wild, technical material with a great work on atmospheres and moods throughout... and still this unique Egyptian, mythological inspiration.
Recently, the technical/brutal death scene also featured another awesome record : Fragmentary Evidence by the canadian band Augury. 4 years in the works to release a true masterpiece of technical craziness. A tremendously dense album, perpetuating their own brand of "death-meets-jazz/rock" kind of vibe.
Don't miss these two if you're into extreme metal... Mindblowing stuff !

Nice, I'll have to check these out. I watched a video of Nile's drummer doing some double bass work on YouTube, and he was doing some odd foot technique that allowed him to pedal at EXTREME speeds...pretty wild.
Also, I've been meaning to check out Gojira too...listened to them before? I haven't yet, but heard they were great.

Re: Extreme stuff
Of course ! Gojira being a french band, they're like our pride here
Not that I find them especially good, but they are, undoubtedly.
As for Nile's drummer (George Kollias), he is the unparalleled king of blast beat, no question... Astounding technical abilities ; by the way, the riffing in Nile reaches extreme speeds too, it's unbelievable at times.

Re: Extreme stuff
I used to hate extreme metal until I gave Opeth a chance. At first, I hated the grows but loved everything else about them. So I started with Watershed and Damnation since they had the fewest grows and worked my way up from there. Doing that, I've really come to appreciate how Akerfeldts growls add to the music.
That kind of opened the gate to extreme metal for me. Since then there have been a few bands I've really gotten into (especially Gojira) that I probably would have passed on had I not given Opeth a chance.

Damn, I really need to check out Gojira. What should I start with? (albums, or even songs?)

The album I started with was From Mars to Sirus. The only other one I've listen to so far is The Way Of All Flesh which was also really good. Either would give you a pretty good idea of what the band is about.

Re: Extreme stuff
Agreed. From Mars To Sirius was really their breakthrough album, and is arguably their best to this day.
Check the track "Backbone" here : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XoUbeKKlo8k
Heavy shit.

Re: Extreme stuff
For me the best even death metal bands are not sooooo extreme....they are really gooooood in their kind of music, very technical and good in sound...but this one (below) is really extreme for me:

and it was not for a joke but very seriously so it is why it is really extreme!!!!

Re: Extreme stuff
The most extreme stuff I know is probably Bedlam of Cacophony. Go ahead and give it a try, you'll see... Yeah, right. They chose good : fucking unbearable. All this recent extreme-technical-hardcore-black-death-jazz-myballs scene that's been surfacing these past few years really doesn't work for me. I like boldness but when it gets to this point, well, exactly : what's the point ?

Really fucking kind of music...hehehe

Re: Extreme stuff
While browsing through my CD stack (or, well, stacks, should I say... these fuckers are everywhere), I happened to find the two records I own from a band called Melechesh. They describe themselves as a "Sumerian Thrashing Black Metal" band, and I completely forgot about these guys until yesterday, when I played these records once again...
... And GODDAMN it's awesome ! How could I have let these get all dusty on some shelf for so long ?
They play a Middle Eastern-soaked brand of thrash/black metal, with very thoughtful lyrics inspired by Sumer mythology. You could say it's kind of Nile meets early Orphaned Land meets Emperor... amazing stuff. I must have overlooked them at the time, and never gave them a real chance. How wrong I was !
If you dig this kind of things, check their latest album, Emissaries. Kicks ass BIG TIME. Here's a song from this killer beast of a record :

Re: Extreme stuff
You know Val, I've been keeping note of all this stuff you're posting and I have it all bookmarked and plan to sit down and check it all out real soon. I'm so intrigued by your descriptions (I guess that's why you're a great music critic) -- I'll get back to you with my opinions soon!

Haha. So what's your opinion on the band Converge? I hear way too much about them but haven't checked them out yet.

Re: Extreme stuff
Weel Converge is one of the biggest bands on the hardcore scene... which I have to admit I never really followed. From what I know of them, they seem to blend a much more "metal" feel to a true punk/hardcore basis. It's just one of these bands, respected as a seminal act in its own genre though constantly evolving, sometimes further than said genre's limits. I think the term "metalcore" (I hate these labels they try to put on everything nowadays) was coined for them by some critic... Anyway, it has some challenging polyrythmic work, crazy guitar sound and riffing, harsh vocals – but with the occasional melodic counterpart. Really well done, to sum it up, but not to my personal liking.
As I said on another topic, I'm not really in this "new" scene that rose around Y2K... I still enjoy what happens in music today, of course, but I guess my pathologic love for good ol' 80's thrash and hip-hop can't be cured
So, I have to say I'm not a big fan of them, but as far as I know they are worth checking out, at the very least (even out of mere curiosity).

Re: Extreme stuff
Friend o' mine just introduced me to this avant-garde black metal band from England, called Code. They describe their music by the term "nouveau gloaming", which is a bit weird but pretty accurate.
Melodic black metal with a tremendous work on atmosphere, moods, and sonic landscapes... I just listened to Nouveau Gloaming (heh), their first album from 2005. Pretty good imho. Lots of nice and clear singing, which is good since black metal grunts can be tedious. Awesome rhythmic work too – great bass player...
They did another record last year, on which I have to get my hands (and hears, hopefully) sometime soon... It's called Resplendent Grotesque and the title itself induces some serious attraction (works with me anyway).
Check em out !

Re: Extreme stuff
Yeah I noticed the board wasn't really active these days... No worries, we all have (real) stuff to do
Re: Extreme stuff
Okay, I'm a bit worried now ahah. It's been MONTHS since anybody posted on this board.
Come on people, wake the fuck up !
Anyway, I mentioned the band Melechesh earlier in this thread I think ; theire new album, "The Epigenesis", is a MASTERPIECE of epic, progressive black metal, imbued with thrash rhythms and mid-eastern elements. The title track is a terrific 12-minute monster that just blew my fucking brains off.
Check them out !

Thank you for being so lame. I wonder why you even logged in...
Sorry mate but I was rooting for a real contribution here. "lol" doesn't work for me.

Re: Extreme stuff
I believe it does. People just think like you : nobody posts, so why would I ? That's why posting stopped, that's why this board may eventually die. It's still a nice, cosy place to share thoughts and views on music.
Besides there's a new album out there. We just have to speak here. People will come back, then new people will join. Easy as pie.
Anyway, new Enslaved album is a fucking wild beast. Check it out ! Quick taste :

They're not as extreme as they used to be, yet their blend of ambient prog and black metal still retains the very essence of their music, their plight. Some really harsh vocals as always, some clean singing too, ground-shattering riffs and mellow parts... Very unique experience ; lyrics are part of the whole thing, written in the same mystic, eerie way.
Not a very uplifting record, as far as mood goes, but a thing of absolute beauty nonetheless.
